What is CBD?

Is CBD the same as the Hemp products I see in my local grocery store?
Hemp products sold in stores are most often made with hemp seed oil, which can contain only trace amounts of CBD. While it has been noted that hemp seed oil can be a great source of nutrition, its marginal quantity of CBD per weight makes it unfeasible as a CBD supplement.
How is CBD Oil made?
Once the cultivation process is completed, the plant material is set for extraction. There are a variety of CBD oil products on the market. Some of them are “whole plant” extracts. Whole plant means pretty much what you think it does – the entire plant is used for extraction. This method is popular in the medical communities because it is believed that a wider spectrum of cannabinoids is captured during extraction. The cannabinoid spectrum is important because it encourages the “entourage effect”, which stimulates the endocannabinoid system. Comparatively, there are CBD isolates that are “pure” CBD. These isolates rely solely on the effectiveness of the CBD and ultimately the quality of the genetics used to obtain it.
What is Industrial Hemp?
Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa is the variety grown for industrial use in Europe, Canada, and elsewhere, while C. sativa subsp. indica generally has poor fiber quality and is primarily used for production of recreational and medicinal drugs. The major difference between the two types of plants is the appearance and the amount of THC secreted in a resinous mixture by epidermal hairs called glandular trichomes. Strains of Cannabis approved for industrial hemp production produce only minute amounts of this psychoactive drug, not enough for any physical or psychological effects. Typically, Hemp contains below 0.3% THC, while Cannabis grown for marijuana can contain anywhere from 6 or 7 % to 20% or even more.
How does the Law define Hemp?
State statutes, with the exception of West Virginia, define industrial hemp as a variety of cannabis with a THC concentration of not more than 0.3 percent. West Virginia defines hemp as cannabis with a THC concentration of less than 1 percent. Many state definitions for industrial hemp specify that THC concentration is on a dry weight basis and can be measured from any part of the plant. Some states also require the plant to be possessed by a licensed grower for it to be considered under the definition of industrial hemp. State legislation also has removed hemp from the state’s controlled substances list and exempted industrial hemp from the statutory definition of marijuana if it is grown within specific regulations. To protect growers from criminal prosecution some states provide an affirmative defense for cannabis possession and cultivation charges under controlled substances law for licensed individuals. States may require licensees to obtain a controlled substances registration from the DEA for the affirmative defense to apply.
